introduction
Hello friends
I'm Mrs Columbia, and I'm new to being a wife, mother, and trying to be a homesteader. I want to share my story so I can look back over the years at all that's changed and we have accomplished.
A bit about us. In 2020, We lived in an apartment for a while and had our firstborn a couple months after our baby was born. we didn't want to raise a child in a cheap, smokey apartment. Then we were living with my mother inlaw in a double wide trailer on 2 ish acres. We got married in 2021, and in 2023, we had our second baby.
Our first summer here in 2020, we had a little garden. I didn't know anything about taking care of a home or the property and didn't think gardening was anything more than putting seeds in the ground, pulling weeds, and getting the fresh foods when they were done. But boy, was that not the case.
In our second summer 2021, we made the garden larger, and I planted more seed. I was still learning about gardening. I thought that putting just any seed in the ground it would grow before fall i would get food from everything i planted. I didn't get very many vegetables for the amount of work. Half died because of bugs eating them a bunch didn't have a long enough growing season. I didn't know about growing zones.
Our third summer 2022 here, I was pregnant with our second child. I was still learning. This was the first time I was able to harvest enough to make most summer meals with something from the garden. Not as much as I want and figureing out how to keep the bugs at bay. I was feeling very excited about next year's garden.
Our fourth summer, 2023, I had our second child in a baby carrier and a 3 year old helping with the garden. To say the least, the weeds were as big as the plants, but I was killing the bugs and trying to keep deer out. We still got a good amount of vegetables and I was still happy and know next year would be better.
Our fifth summer 2024 we bought compost just learned about that. We build an 8 feet deer fence. We bought a small indoor greenhouse. I was learning how to start seeds. Then I learned that we had a ground hog problem. So I replant with seeds and put rocks around the bottom of the fence. Best harvest ever had enough to save, put some in the freezer. I haven't tried canning yet.
To be continued
I will be posting every Sunday morning
